EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print by Ernest Dudley Heath, we witness a dramatic moment from ancient Rome. The image portrays a messenger urgently spurring his horse towards the city, carrying an important letter that could change the course of history. The scene takes us back to 1912 and depicts a significant event during the Punic Wars. Hasdrubal Barca entrusted four soldiers with a crucial letter meant for his brother Hannibal's hands. However, Consul Claudius Nero's men intercepted and captured the soldiers, allowing the enemy to obtain Hasdrubal's battle plans. To counter this threat, Consul Claudius Nero swiftly dispatched a messenger to Marcus Livius Drusus, informing him of his imminent arrival and strategizing how they would defeat Hasdrubal. This artwork not only captures the intensity of war but also offers glimpses into ancient Roman life. The rider is dressed in traditional Roman attire as he gallops through an ancient lane in haste. The vibrant colors bring out every detail of his cloak flowing behind him and highlight the speed at which he races towards his destination. Ernest Dudley Heath masterfully brings this historical event to life through skillful brushstrokes and attention to detail. As viewers, we are transported back in time to witness this pivotal moment unfold before our eyes.
