The Messenger of Peace, 1887. Artist: Joseph Swain
The Messenger of Peace, 1887. The radical Liberal, Joseph Chamberlain, is here the Messenger of Peace. He had become the Conservatives Colonial Secretary, although he stayed within the ranks as a Liberal Unionist. This cartoon accompanies a little article giving details of Chamberlains recent speech in Belfast, in which he said, I have read... that I have come to Ulster to revive religious bigotry, to rekindle the embers of party strife, and to revive ancient feuds... I can assure you that these are not the objects which I propose to myself. Much laughter followed. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 22, 1887

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures the essence of Joseph Chamberlain, a radical Liberal politician and key figure in British politics during the late 19th century. Created by renowned artists John Tenniel and Joseph Swain, this cartoon-like depiction showcases Chamberlain as a winged messenger of peace. The image serves as a satirical response to accusations made against Chamberlain regarding his intentions in Belfast. In his recent speech, he vehemently denied any plans to revive religious bigotry or ignite party strife. The accompanying article highlights the irony and humor in Chamberlain's denial, with laughter following his statement. This engraving not only reflects the political climate of its time but also symbolizes the complexities within British politics during that era. As both a member of the Conservative Party and an advocate for liberal ideals, Chamberlain's role as Colonial Secretary while remaining loyal to Liberal Unionism was unconventional yet influential. Through this caricatured portrayal, Swain skillfully captures Chamberlain's distinctive features while emphasizing his role as a messenger promoting peace amidst political turmoil. The print successfully conveys both satire and admiration for this prominent statesman. "The Messenger of Peace" remains an important historical artifact representing an era when politicians like Joseph Chamberlain played significant roles in shaping British society. This Heritage Image Partnership print offers viewers a glimpse into nineteenth-century politics through artistry and wit.
