Men with horse, 1952. Creator: Shirley Markham
Men with horse, 1952. Illustration for " Jamaica Inn" by Daphne du Maurier. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Men with horse, 1952" showcases the artistic talent of Shirley Markham. As an illustrator for Daphne du Maurier's renowned novel "Jamaica Inn". Markham skillfully captures a moment that transports us to the rugged landscapes of Cornwall. Trained at the prestigious Central School of Art in London under the guidance of Mervyn Peake, Markham's unique style is influenced by prominent British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. Her attention to detail and ability to evoke emotion through her drawings is evident in this piece. Markham's travels across Italy left a lasting impression on her work. The time spent sketching classical buildings in Rome and exploring the Dolomite Mountains added depth to her artistic repertoire. Despite her promising career as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus, and programs; societal expectations during that era led Markham to abandon her professional aspirations after marrying in 1957. However, now we have the privilege of rediscovering her hidden talents as her portfolio sees daylight for the first time. This print serves as a testament not only to Markham's exceptional skills but also sheds light on the challenges faced by middle-class women during that period. It reminds us of how societal pressures can stifle creativity but also encourages us to celebrate these remarkable artists whose work deserves recognition beyond their attics.
