EDITORS COMMENTS
Matheson Lang (1879-1948) and Hutin Britton in Macbeth, 1911-1912. This print captures the dynamic duo of Matheson Lang and Hutin Britton during their performance of Macbeth in the early 20th century. Matheson Lang, a Canadian actor who gained fame in the UK, was renowned for his Shakespearean roles, including Hamlet, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet. His marriage to actress Hutin Britton led them to establish their own company that toured India, South Africa, and Australia from 1910 to 1913. In this image taken from Penroses Pictorial Annual 1911-1912, we see Lang pointing dramatically while dressed as Macbeth inside a fortification or castle setting. The intensity on his face is palpable as he embodies the character's inner turmoil. By his side stands Hutin Britton with her hand gesturing towards something off-camera. Their chemistry on stage is evident even through this monochrome photograph. This snapshot not only showcases their talent but also highlights the grandeur of Edwardian-era theater productions. The attention to detail in costumes and set design transports us back to a time when live performances were at the forefront of entertainment. Matheson Lang's career extended beyond the stage; he became one of Britain's leading movie stars in the silent film era of the 1920s. However, it is through images like these that we can appreciate his mastery as an actor alongside his partner-in-crime Hutin Britton during their Shakespearean endeavors.
