Mary ascends the stairs to the temple, from a Mir at al-quds (Mirror of Holiness)
Mary ascends the stairs to the temple, from a Mir at al-quds (Mirror of Holiness) of Father Jerome Xavier (Spanish, 1549-1617), 1602-1604. In this scene from a noncanonical European source on the life of the Virgin Mary, her parents have brought their three-year-old daughter to the temple to be educated. According to the text it was tradition on such occasions for a priest to read a chapter from the Psalms as the child slowly progressed up each of the 15 steps. However, as soon as Mary placed her foot on the first step she pulled her hand away from her guide and quickly walked up the steep staircase without stopping or looking back. The figures around the temple gesture in surprise at her determination and eagerness to enter the service of God

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Mary ascends the stairs to the temple, from a Mir at al-quds (Mirror of Holiness)" we are transported back in time to witness a remarkable moment in the life of the Virgin Mary. Created by Father Jerome Xavier during 1602-1604, this noncanonical European source sheds light on an event rarely depicted in traditional religious art. The scene unfolds as Mary's parents lovingly guide their three-year-old daughter up the steps of the temple for her education. As custom dictates, a priest reads from the Psalms with each step she takes. However, what astonishes those present is Mary's unwavering determination and eagerness to serve God. With her foot placed firmly on the first step, Mary breaks free from her guide's hand and swiftly ascends without hesitation or looking back. The figures surrounding the temple express surprise at witnessing such resolute devotion within such a young child. This exquisite artwork showcases delicate brushwork and vibrant colors that bring to life both Mary's extraordinary journey and its cultural significance during Mughal period Northern India. Preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images and housed in The Cleveland Museum of Art, this ink painting on paper captures an awe-inspiring moment that continues to inspire viewers today.
