Marriage Ceremonial of the Baron Alphonse de Rothschild and Miss Leonora Rothschild... 1857. Creator: Unknown
Marriage Ceremonial of the Baron Alphonse de Rothschild and Miss Leonora Rothschild [at Gunnersbury Park]: the Bridegroom Breaking the Wine-cup, 1857. The marriage contract having been read, the Chief Rabbi presented a wine-cup, and invoked on the wedding pair seven blessings. The Chief Rabbi then congratulated the pair, and offered up a supplication for the poor of the Land of Promise. The wine-cup, which the Hebrews regard as the symbol of blended joy and sorrow, was then taken by the bridegroom, who, after tasting the contents, threw the cup on the ground, when it was shattered into pieces, thus denoting the precarious nature of life and joy, and commemorating also that sorrow which is still held sacred by the Jew - the destruction of the Temple...Attendant upon the bride are the sixteen bridemaids in their chastely- elegant costume'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the poignant moment from the Marriage Ceremonial of Baron Alphonse de Rothschild and Miss Leonora Rothschild, which took place at Gunnersbury Park in 1857. The image showcases the Baron breaking the wine-cup, an essential part of the Jewish wedding tradition. After the marriage contract had been read, the Chief Rabbi presented a wine-cup and invoked seven blessings upon the couple. He then offered a supplication for the poor of the Land of Promise. The wine-cup, symbolizing blended joy and sorrow, was then taken by the bridegroom, who, after tasting its contents, shattered it on the ground. This act symbolized the precarious nature of life and joy, as well as commemorating the sorrow held sacred by the Jewish faith - the destruction of the Temple. Surrounding the bride is a group of sixteen bridesmaids, elegantly dressed in chaste costumes, adding to the grandeur and solemnity of the occasion. This photograph, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1857, provides a glimpse into the rich history and traditions of Jewish weddings during that era.
