EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a portrait of the enigmatic Mary Queen of Scots, also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland. Created in 1933 by an unknown artist, this image captures the essence and allure of one of history's most fascinating figures. Mary Queen of Scots reigned over Scotland from 1542 to 1567 and was briefly queen consort of France from 1559 to 1560. A first cousin once removed to Queen Elizabeth I of England, she had previously laid claim to the English throne, which ultimately led to her tragic demise. In this circular cigarette-card portrait miniature, inspired by Nicholas Hilliard's original work, we see Mary adorned in a regal dress with intricate lace details and an elegant ruff collar. Her piercing gaze reflects both strength and vulnerability as she navigates the complexities of power and politics during her tumultuous reign. The photograph is part of "Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte" a book featuring cigarette-card portraits that depict influential figures from world history spanning four centuries. This particular print offers us a glimpse into the life and legacy of Mary Queen of Scots—a woman whose story continues to captivate our imagination even today. As we admire this remarkable piece, let us remember the indomitable spirit and enduring legacy left behind by this iconic monarch who dared to challenge convention and fight for her place in history.
