Two Male Nudes, 1710. Creator: Louis de Boullogne (French, 1654-1733)
Two Male Nudes, 1710. Drawing the male nude from a live model was the cornerstone of artistic training at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. Louis de Boullogne was a professor there the year he made this drawing, and it may well record the pose he set during one of the life classes he supervised. The posing of two models together was established as a monthly practice at the Academy in 1706 and normally occurred during the last week of the month. The use of two men instead of one allowed the professor to suggest a narrative more easily. Here, their interaction implies a warrior dying in battle being supported by a companion

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the artwork "Two Male Nudes" created by Louis de Boullogne in 1710. The drawing depicts two male figures, drawn from live models, which was a fundamental aspect of artistic education at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. As a professor at the academy during that time, it is likely that Boullogne captured this particular pose during one of his supervised life classes. The practice of posing two models together became a monthly tradition at the Academy starting in 1706, usually taking place towards the end of each month. This approach allowed professors like Boullogne to convey narratives more easily through their drawings. In this specific piece, their interaction suggests a scene where one warrior is being supported by his companion as he succumbs to death on the battlefield. Executed with black chalk and heightened with white chalk, this drawing exemplifies Boullogne's mastery and skillful technique. It belongs to the rich heritage of French art from the 18th century and serves as a testament to Boullogne's contribution to art history. This remarkable print is part of Heritage Art/Heritage Images' collection housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art. It offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate and delve into the profound artistic traditions that shaped generations of artists throughout history.
