EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the somber image of Major General Sir R. H. Sale, a distinguished British soldier who met his tragic fate at the Battle of Moodkee in December 1845. The mid-19th-century engraving, produced by John Tallis & Company in London and New York, portrays Sale as a stoic figure on horseback. Major General Robert Henry Sale dedicated much of his military career to serving in India and Afghanistan under the British East India Company. Rising through the ranks, he achieved the esteemed position of Major-General before meeting his untimely demise. The Battle of Moodkee was a significant event during the First Sikh War, fought in Punjab, India. It was here that Sale sustained mortal wounds while bravely leading his troops into battle against formidable opposition. In this poignant depiction, we witness Sale's valiant spirit amidst adversity as he faces imminent death from his injuries. The monochrome tones add depth to this historical moment captured by J. Gilbert Rogers for John Tallis & Company. This print serves as a reminder not only of Sale's sacrifice but also reflects upon themes such as colonialism, imperialism, and warfare prevalent during that era. It stands as an enduring testament to those who have given their lives in service to their country throughout history.
