Her Majesty's Visit to Hull - the Procession in the Market-Place, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Her Majesty's Visit to Hull - the Procession in the Market-Place, 1854. Queen Victoria visits Yorkshire. The inhabitants testified their loyal devotion by an illumination so general, that, along whole lines of streets, scarcely a house could be seen which had not a device of some kind or other. The chief display was in the Market-place and in Whitefriargate, where triumphal arches blazed with light, and the Wilberforce monument and the gilded statue of King William III. were thrown into bold relief. A very pretty effect was produced by lighting up from the interior the stained-glass window of Holy Trinity Church - a fine old edifice...which opens into the Market place...So great was the demand for gas for purposes of illumination, that handbills were issued by the gas companies, requesting the inhabitants to husband the supply, and burn as little as possible within their houses...'. Her Majesty's Visit to Hull - the Procession in the Market-Place, 1854: A Historic Moment in Yorkshire's History This photograph captures a significant moment in Hull's history, as Her Majesty Queen Victoria paid a visit to the bustling port city in 1854. The image portrays the grand procession making its way through the Market-Place, surrounded by an excited and devoted crowd. The inhabitants of Hull had eagerly anticipated the Queen's arrival, and their loyalty was reflected in the extensive illuminations that adorned the city. Along the streets, houses were illuminated with devices of all kinds, creating a breathtaking spectacle that left no house unlit. The Market-place and Whitefriargate were the focal points of this dazzling display, where triumphal arches blazed with light and the Wilberforce monument and the gilded statue of King William III were thrown into bold relief. The effect of the illuminations was further enhanced by the lighting of the stained-glass window of Holy Trinity Church, a fine old edifice that opened into the Market place. The demand for gas for illumination purposes was so high that handbills were issued by the gas companies, requesting the inhabitants to conserve the supply and burn as little gas as possible within their homes. This photograph is a testament to the excitement and enthusiasm that engulfed Hull during Queen Victoria's visit, a moment that would forever be etched in the city's history. The image offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing us with a valuable insight into the grandeur and pageantry of a bygone era.
