Her Majesty's Visit to Germany, the market-place, Gotha... 1862. Creator: Unknown
Her Majesty's Visit to Germany, the market-place, Gotha - from a sketch by our special artist, 1862. Gotha, the capital of the duchy, is, alternately with Coburg, the residence of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, to whom our Queen is now on a visit...Gotha is pleasantly situated on the Leina, here crossed by several bridges, and consists of the town proper and four suburbs, the former occupying the side of a hill in the form of an irregular polygon, surrounded by ramparts, which have been converted into promenades; and by a wall with four gates...The manufactures consist chiefly of woollen, linen, and cotton tissues; hats, carpets, leather, porcelain, musical instruments, and articles in gold and silver; and there are several tileworks and numerous mills. Its population is about 14, 000. The Almanach de Gotha, which gives the names, ages, and pedigrees of all the reigning Princes of Europe and their families, is printed in this city. There are many pleasant excursions in the neighbourhood of Gotha, though its beauties are perhaps somewhat exaggerated by the natives'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photographic print that transports us back in time to an era of royal visits and European diplomacy. The image, created from a sketch by an unknown artist for the Illustrated London News in 1862, captures Queen Victoria's visit to the picturesque town of Gotha, the capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Gotha, situated on the Leina River, is a charming city with a population of approximately 14,000, known for its diverse manufactures, including woollen, linen, and cotton tissues, hats, carpets, leather, porcelain, musical instruments, and gold and silver articles. The city's Almanach de Gotha, a renowned publication that provides the names, ages, and pedigrees of all the reigning European princes and their families, is still printed there to this day. The photograph showcases the bustling marketplace of Gotha, where locals and visitors alike gather to exchange goods and socialize. Queen Victoria, dressed in her elegant attire, is depicted in the foreground, engaging in conversation with the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. The town's architecture, with its ramparts converted into promenades and four gates, can be seen in the background. Gotha's scenic beauty, while perhaps somewhat exaggerated by the natives, is undeniable. The town's exquisite charm and rich history continue to attract visitors from around the world, making it a must-see destination for those interested in European culture and history. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing a window into the world of royal visits and the daily life of a European town over a century ago.
