Lumber for the Anadyr Expedition on the Booms Deck, 1889. From a collection consisting of an album and individual photographs that document the Arctic voyage in 1889 of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number of the album suggest that it belonged to the photograph collection of Emperor Nicholas II. The album contains photographs of the local Chukchi people and views of the harbor Petropavlovsk, the village of Nikol'skoe on Bering Island, and Novo-Mariinskii, where construction of the first building is shown. Lumber for the Anadyr Expedition on the Booms Deck, 1889
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an intriguing photograph that offers a glimpse into the past, specifically the Arctic voyage of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and the construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii in northeastern Russia during the late 19th century. The image captures a moment on the booms deck of the ship, where lumber is being prepared for transport to the construction site. The photograph is part of a collection that belonged to Emperor Nicholas II, as evidenced by the unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number of the album. The collection documents the expedition and the establishment of the Russian settlement, which is depicted in the photograph through the image of the lumber on the deck. The photograph captures the raw and industrial nature of the scene, with the lumber planks stacked high and secured by ropes and guys. A man in work clothes stands at the edge of the deck, looking directly at the camera with a determined expression. The ship's funnel and the water in the background add depth and context to the image. The photograph is a window into the meeting of frontiers, as the Russian expedition brought together the Chukchi people, the rugged Arctic landscape, and the industrial might of the clipper ship. The image captures the hard work and dedication required to build a settlement in such a challenging environment, and the importance of transportation and building materials in the construction industry during this time period. Overall, "Lumber for the Anadyr Expedition on the Booms Deck, 1889" is a significant historical document that offers insights into the past and the challenges of building a settlement in a remote and harsh environment.
