Lothair I, Frankish Emperor, 9th century
Lothair I, Frankish Emperor, 9th century. Lothair (795-855) seated on a throne and wearing a crown flanked by two guards. When the Emperor Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne, divided the empire between his three sons in 817 in an attempt to ensure an orderly succession, he proclaimed his eldest son, Lothair, co-emperor and King of Italy. After the death of Louis wife Ermengarde, he remarried and had a fourth son, who he also wanted to have a share of the empire. The three elder sons revolted and civil war ensued, with the brothers eventually fighting amongst themselves when Lothair claimed the entire empire for himself after Louis died in 840. The final outcome saw the Empire of the Franks split into three parts. Lothair had the imperial title and ruled Italy and a territory stretching from the Mediterranean to the North Sea along the Rhone and Rhine valleys, although he left the government of Italy to his eldest son, Louis. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Lothair I, the Frankish Emperor of the 9th century, seated on a majestic throne adorned with a regal crown. Flanked by two loyal guards, his presence exudes power and authority. During a time of political turmoil and succession disputes within the Carolingian Empire, Lothair's father, Emperor Louis the Pious, divided the empire among his three sons in 817 to ensure an orderly transition of power. As the eldest son, Lothair was proclaimed co-emperor and King of Italy. However, after Louis' wife Ermengarde passed away and he remarried to have another son who he wanted to include in the inheritance, tensions escalated into civil war. The three elder brothers revolted against their father's decision and eventually turned against each other when Lothair claimed sole control over the entire empire upon Louis' death in 840. The aftermath saw the once-unified Empire of Franks split into three separate realms. Lothair retained his imperial title while ruling over Italy as well as vast territories stretching from Mediterranean to North Sea along Rhone and Rhine valleys. However, he entrusted governance over Italy to his eldest son, Louis. This remarkable print not only showcases Lothair I at his peak but also serves as a visual reminder of how political ambitions can lead even family members down treacherous paths towards division and conflict within an empire that was once united under Charlemagne's rule.
