Looking down the main passage to Khufus sepulchre within the Great Pyramid, Egypt, 1905. Artist: Underwood & Underwood
Looking down the main passage to Khufus sepulchre within the Great Pyramid, Egypt, 1905. Up this superb hall the body of the king was borne on the day of burial; those cuttings in the side walls just above the ramps were probbly for the reception of timbers intended to facilitate the ascent. The chamber behind us, in which the body was to rest, is no less remarkable than the grand hall down which we look. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the year 1905, where we find ourselves standing at the entrance of Khufu's sepulchre within the Great Pyramid in Egypt. The renowned photographers Underwood & Underwood have expertly captured this momentous scene, allowing us to witness a glimpse into ancient Egyptian burial practices. As we gaze down the main passage, our eyes are drawn towards the grand hall that stretches before us. It is here that the body of King Khufu was carried on his day of burial, an awe-inspiring sight indeed. The side walls bear cuttings just above ramps, which were likely intended for timber supports to aid in ascending. Behind us lies another remarkable chamber where the king's body would eventually rest. This entire complex is a testament to both architectural brilliance and reverence for death held by ancient Egyptians. The stereoscopic card format adds depth and dimension to this image, immersing us further into its historical significance. Through this photograph from "Egypt Through the Stereoscope" series with accompanying text by James H Breasted, we gain insight into a civilization long gone but forever etched in our collective memory. With every detail meticulously preserved through monochrome photography, this print transports us back to a time when pyramids stood tall as mausoleums for pharaohs like Khufu. It serves as a reminder of Egypt's rich cultural heritage and its enduring fascination with life after death.
