Les Soirees de Rome: Le Poteau, 1763-1764. Creator: Hubert Robert (French, 1733-1808)
Les Soirees de Rome: Le Poteau, 1763-1764. Derived from his own pen-and-ink drawings, this suite of etchings features fictional characters situated near recognizable buildings and statues in Rome. On the title page, Robert dedicated the suite to Marguerite Le Compte, who visited Rome in 1764 in the company of the wealthy author and art enthusiast Claude Henri Watelet. Both Le Compte and Watelet were amateur etchers, and they socialized with a group that included artists and printmakers centered at the academies in Italy. Roberts dedication was likely motivated by the hope of future patronage from Le Compte. She may be the generous woman with a hand muff depicted in The Ancient Temple, the fifth scene in this series

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "Les Soirees de Rome: Le Poteau" a series of etchings created by the talented French artist Hubert Robert between 1763 and 1764. Derived from his own pen-and-ink drawings, these prints feature fictional characters placed in proximity to iconic buildings and statues in Rome. The dedication on the title page reveals that Robert dedicated this suite of etchings to Marguerite Le Compte, who visited Rome in 1764 alongside Claude Henri Watelet, a wealthy author and art enthusiast. Both Le Compte and Watelet were amateur etchers themselves, fostering connections with artists and printmakers within Italy's academies. Robert's dedication was likely driven by the anticipation of future patronage from Le Compte. Interestingly, it is speculated that she may be depicted as the generous woman donning a hand muff in "The Ancient Temple" which serves as the fifth scene within this remarkable series. This particular print captures the essence of Robert's artistic prowess during the 18th century. With its intricate details and masterful execution, it exemplifies his ability to blend fiction with reality while showcasing his deep appreciation for Roman architecture and culture. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this photograph preserves an important piece of French heritage art created by one of France's most renowned artists - Hubert Robert.
