The Left Side of the Quarterdeck with Cargo for the Anadyr Expedition, 1889. Creator: Unknown
The Left Side of the Quarterdeck with Cargo for the Anadyr Expedition, 1889. From a collection consisting of an album and individual photographs that document the Arctic voyage in 1889 of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number of the album suggest that it belonged to the photograph collection of Emperor Nicholas II. The album contains photographs of the local Chukchi people and views of the harbor Petropavlovsk, the village of Nikol'skoe on Bering Island, and Novo-Mariinskii, where construction of the first building is shown. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'The Left Side of the Quarterdeck with Cargo for the Anadyr Expedition, 1889,' is an intriguing glimpse into the past, showcasing the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) as it prepared for its journey to northeastern Russia. The image, from a collection that documents the Arctic voyage and the construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii on the Bering Sea, is believed to have been part of Emperor Nicholas II's photograph collection. The quarterdeck of the Razboinik is bustling with activity as men load cargo onto the ship. Two men, dressed in heavy coats and hats, stand at the railing, seemingly overseeing the preparations. The ship's lifeboats are also visible, ready for use in case of emergency. The cargo, consisting of various supplies and provisions, is carefully loaded onto the ship, ensuring that all necessary items are on board for the long journey ahead. The photograph provides a unique window into the meeting of frontiers, as the Russian expedition set out to establish a settlement in a remote and challenging location. The image is a testament to the determination and resilience of the explorers and settlers, as they braved the harsh Arctic conditions to expand the Russian empire. The photograph is a valuable historical record, capturing a moment in time from the 1890s, and is a reminder of the rich heritage and history of Russia's Arctic regions. The image is a still, photograph, with the boats and men standing out clearly against the water, making it a fascinating addition to any collection of historical or maritime photography.
