Leaf from an Antiphonary: Historiated Initial P with the Prophet Samuel... c. 1439-1447
Leaf from an Antiphonary: Historiated Initial P with the Prophet Samuel; Arms of the Visconti Family and the Olivetan Order, c. 1439-1447. This leaf is distinguished by a large initial P depicting Samuel, the last and one of the greatest of Israels judges. It introduces the text Preparte corda vestra domino et servite (" Prepare your hearts for the Lord and serve" ). In the lower margin are the arms of the Visconti family, rulers of Milan, featuring an eagle (left) and a coiled serpent (right). At bottom center is the emblem of the Olivetan Order, a reformed branch of the Benedictines founded in 1319 known as the " white monks." The Olivetan monastery in Milan was founded in 1400 and it appears that this leaf belonged to a set of choral books presented to the monastery by one of the Visconti, perhaps about 1439-47. The so-called Olivetan Master takes his name from a luxuriously illustrated psalter made for the orders monastery in Milan, where he was undoubtedly a monk

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf from an Antiphonary, dating back to the years 1439-1447. The highlight of this leaf is the striking historiated initial P, featuring the Prophet Samuel, who was one of Israel's most revered judges. The intricate detail and artistry in this initial truly captivate the viewer's attention. Adding to its significance, the lower margin proudly displays the arms of the Visconti family, rulers of Milan during that era. These arms are adorned with an eagle on the left and a coiled serpent on the right, symbolizing power and wisdom. At bottom center lies another emblem - that of the Olivetan Order. Founded in 1319 as a reformed branch of Benedictines, this order was known as "white monks". The Olivetan monastery in Milan came into existence in 1400 and it is believed that this particular leaf belonged to a set of choral books presented to them by one of the Visconti members around 1439-1447. The artist responsible for creating such exquisite illustrations is commonly referred to as Olivetan Master. He gained recognition through his beautifully illustrated psalter made specifically for this monastery in Milan where he resided as a monk. This print not only captures historical significance but also serves as a testament to artistic brilliance and religious devotion during that period.
