Large Log of Honduras Mahogany, sold at Birkenhead, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Large Log of Honduras Mahogany, sold at Birkenhead, 1850. Sale by Messrs. Holmes, Slater, and Crook, brokers. There was a company of about 160 at the sale, which commenced with American woods, a great quantity being disposed of. The sale of the Honduras mahogany, which consisted of about 650 logs, was very spirited, and brought good prices. For the monster log there was great competition; and eventually it sold at Is. 1½d. per foot, the purchase-money amounting to £316 17s. 6d...The tree that this log was manufactured from grew in the Mosquito territory of Honduras. The length of the trunk, clear of branch, was 72 feet; its circumference, where it was cut (twelve feet above the ground), was 30 feet; and the entire tree turned out 17, 000 feet of sound wood: say, three logs 20 feet long each from the trunk, and some very large logs from the branches'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print from the 19th century depicts a monumental log of Honduras Mahogany, sold at Birkenhead, Merseyside, England, in 1850. The sale, conducted by Messrs. Holmes, Slater, and Crook, brokers, attracted a large crowd of around 160 people. The auction began with American woods, followed by an energetic bidding war for the Honduras mahogany, which consisted of approximately 650 logs. The competition was particularly fierce for the 'monster log,' which eventually sold for an impressive 1½d per foot, amounting to £316 17s. 6d. The tree from which this colossal log was harvested grew in the Mosquito territory of Honduras. Measuring an astounding 72 feet in length and 30 feet in circumference where it was cut, twelve feet above the ground, the tree yielded an impressive 17,000 feet of sound wood. This equates to three logs, each 20 feet long, extracted from the trunk, and several large logs sourced from the branches. The image captures the excitement and intensity of the sale, with businessmen donning top hats and Victorian attire, gathered at the bustling wharf, surrounded by the backdrop of railway docks and transportation infrastructure. The Illustrated London News reported on this significant event, providing a glimpse into the thriving timber trade during the 19th century.
