Laid table at the Bell Inn in Edmonton, 1878, (c1918). Creator: Randolph Caldecott

Laid table at the Bell Inn in Edmonton, 1878, (c1918). John Gilpins dinner set out for him, but his bolting horse prevents him from stopping. Gilpin was the subject of a comic ballad of 1782 by William Cowper entitled " The Diverting History of John Gilpin". The ballad, based on real-life character, describes how, on a journey to Edmonton (north in London), Gilpin, a draper, became separated from his wife and children after losing control of his horse, and ended up in the town of Ware, ten miles away from his intended destination. From " The Diverting History of John Gilpin", by William Cowper. [Frederick Warne and Co. London & New York, c1918]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the laid table at the historic Bell Inn in Edmonton, captured by Randolph Caldecott in 1878. The scene depicts John Gilpin's dinner set out for him, but his runaway horse prevents him from stopping. This whimsical image is inspired by William Cowper's comic ballad of 1782 titled "The Diverting History of John Gilpin". The ballad recounts the true story of a draper named Gilpin who, on his journey to Edmonton, lost control of his horse and ended up ten miles away in Ware. Caldecott's attention to detail brings this 18th-century setting to life. The rustic furniture and cutlery on the table transport us back in time, while capturing the essence of British country charm. In this bustling inn filled with laughter and merriment, we catch a glimpse of men enjoying their pints as they are served by a diligent waiter. This photograph not only showcases Caldecott's artistic talent but also pays homage to English history and literature. It reminds us that even amidst chaos and unexpected detours, there is always room for humor and enjoyment. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we can't help but feel drawn into the lively atmosphere of an era long gone yet forever preserved through artistry like Caldecott’s masterpiece.
