King Richard I (1157-1199) surprised by Austrian soldiers
King Richard I (1157-1199) surprised by Austrian soldiers. Richard was King of England from 1189 to 1199. He was known as Richard the Lionheart, or C?ur de Lion, even before his accession because of his military reputation. He spent little of his reign in England, setting out on the Third Crusade in 1190, and from 1194 onwards fighting to regain territories in France. He remains one of the very few Kings of England remembered by reputation, not number. From Cassells Illustrated History of England

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in history - King Richard I, also known as Richard the Lionheart, caught off guard by Austrian soldiers. The image showcases the monarch's surprise as he is awakened from his slumber in his royal bedchamber. Clad in his nightgown, Richard stands tall with a sword bearer by his side, ready to defend himself against this unexpected attack. Richard I was renowned for his military prowess even before ascending to the throne of England in 1189. His reputation as a fearless warrior earned him the nickname "Cœur de Lion". However, this particular event highlights the vulnerability of even the mightiest rulers. The engraving depicts not only an intense battle scene but also provides insights into medieval clothing and weaponry. It transports us back to the 12th century when wars were fought with swords and soldiers wore distinctive attire on the battlefield. Although Richard spent little time ruling England during his reign, focusing instead on crusades and territorial disputes in France, he remains one of history's most remembered English kings due to his valorous deeds rather than mere numerical succession. This remarkable print from Cassells Illustrated History of England serves as a testament to King Richard I's indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication to protect his country. It reminds us that even great leaders can be taken by surprise but are always prepared to fight for their people and honor until their last breath.
