King Richard I (1157-1199) kneeling before the shrine of St Januarius
King Richard I (1157-1199) kneeling before the shrine of St Januarius. Richard was King of England from 1189 to 1199. He was known as Richard the Lionheart, or C?ur de Lion, even before his accession because of his military reputation. He spent little of his reign in England, setting out on the Third Crusade in 1190, and from 1194 onwards fighting to regain territories in France. He remains one of the very few Kings of England remembered by reputation, not number. From Cassells Illustrated History of England

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, showcasing King Richard I of England kneeling before the revered shrine of St Januarius. Known as Richard the Lionheart or Cœur de Lion, he was already renowned for his military prowess even before ascending to the throne in 1189. However, this image reveals a different side of the mighty monarch - one of humility and devotion. Richard's reign saw him spend little time in England, embarking on the Third Crusade in 1190 and engaging in battles to reclaim territories in France from 1194 onwards. Despite his absence from his kingdom, Richard's reputation as a valiant ruler endured throughout generations. The architectural features surrounding him add an air of grandeur to this scene. The archways and pillars create a sense of solemnity within the crypt where St Januarius' shrine is located. It is here that Richard seeks solace through prayer, demonstrating his deep religious faith. As we gaze upon this monochrome engraving from Cassell's Illustrated History of England, we are reminded that King Richard I remains etched into our collective memory not by mere numerical order but by virtue of his remarkable character and indomitable spirit. This print serves as a poignant reminder of both his royal lineage and enduring legacy as one of England's most celebrated kings.
