King Louis Philippe I of France, c1845-1850
King Louis Philippe I of France, c1845-1850. Louis Philippe (1773-1850) was proclaimed king in 1830 after the overthrow of the repressive regime of Charles X by the July Revolution. Ruling as King of the French rather than of France, he attempted to establish a monarchy more in touch with the people than previously. Louis Philippes rule was initially popular, but his regime increasingly came to be regarded as conservative and favouring the wealthy. In 1848 the people revolted again and Louis Philippe abdicated and fled to England. His overthrow brought an end to the monarchy in France. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic presence of King Louis Philippe I of France, dating back to the mid-19th century. Louis Philippe ascended to the throne in 1830 following a popular uprising against Charles X's oppressive regime during the July Revolution. Unlike his predecessors, he aimed to establish a monarchy that was more attuned to the needs and aspirations of the people. Initially embraced by his subjects, Louis Philippe's reign gradually became associated with conservatism and favoritism towards the wealthy elite. The discontent simmering within society eventually erupted into another revolt in 1848, leading to his abdication and subsequent exile in England. This marked an end to monarchy in France. In this portrait, we see King Louis Philippe seated regally on an elegant armchair amidst tasteful furniture. His posture exudes authority while also revealing a sense of weariness from years spent navigating turbulent political waters. The image offers us a glimpse into both his power as a ruler and his vulnerability as a man caught between conflicting forces. Preserved within Album de Photographies, Dans L'Intimite de Personnages Illustres - Editions MD's collection spanning from 1845-1890, this photograph provides us with invaluable insight into one of France's most pivotal historical figures. It serves as a reminder that even those who wield great power are not immune to societal upheavals or their consequences.
