King Edward VII (1841-1910), 1902-1903
King Edward VII (1841-1910), 1902-1903. Before his accession to the throne in 1901, Edward held the title of Prince of Wales, and has the distinction of having been heir apparent to the throne longer than anyone in English or British history. His reign saw the first official recognition of the office of the Prime Minister in 1905. He was the first British monarch of the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which was renamed by his son, George V, as the House of Windsor. From Penroses Pictorial Annual 1902-1903, An Illustrated Review of the Graphic Arts, volume 8, edited by William Gamble and published by AW Penrose (London, 1902-1903)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases King Edward VII, who reigned from 1902 to 1910. Before ascending the throne, he held the prestigious title of Prince of Wales for an unprecedented length of time, making him the longest-serving heir apparent in English and British history. The image captures his regal presence as he dons a ceremonial costume befitting his royal status. During his reign, King Edward VII played a pivotal role in shaping modern British politics. In 1905, he oversaw the official recognition of the Prime Minister's office, marking a significant milestone in Britain's governance system. Belonging to the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha by birthright, this dynasty was later renamed as the House of Windsor by his son and successor, George V. This change reflected a desire to distance themselves from their German heritage during World War I. The print originates from Penroses Pictorial Annual 1902-1903: An Illustrated Review of Graphic Arts. Edited by William Gamble and published by AW Penrose in London during that period, this volume offers a visual journey through various art forms prevalent at that time. Through this remarkable photograph captured over a century ago, we are transported back to an era defined by elegance and grandeur—a testament to King Edward VII's enduring legacy as both monarch and statesman.
