Kanab Canyon, 1874. Creator: Andrew Varick Stout Anthony
Kanab Canyon, 1874. Rock formation on Kanab Creek, Utah, USA. The creek is a tributary of the Colorado River and is part of the Grand Canyon system. Kanab Canyon is about sixty miles long, and, by following its bed, one can descend to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. It is a very difficult task, requiring several days severe labor... The picture drawn by the artist of a pinnacle in one of the angles of the Kanab is from a photograph taken by Mr. [John Karl] Hillers [US government photographer]. The pinnacle itself is about eight hundred, and the wall in the background of the illustration more than four thousand feet in altitude. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

Kanab Canyon, 1874 - A Majestic Glimpse into the Grand Canyon System
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print of Kanab Canyon, taken in 1874 by Andrew Varick Stout Anthony, transports us back to a time when the American West was still largely unexplored. The image showcases a remarkable rock formation on Kanab Creek in Utah, USA. As a tributary of the mighty Colorado River and an integral part of the Grand Canyon system, this canyon holds immense geological significance. Stretching approximately sixty miles long, Kanab Canyon presents an awe-inspiring challenge for those daring enough to descend its rugged terrain. Anthony's photograph captures one such pinnacle rising from the depths of this majestic landscape. The artist skillfully recreates this dramatic scene based on a photograph taken by John Karl Hillers, a renowned US government photographer. Through their collaboration and artistic vision, they bring to life the sheer grandeur and raw beauty of Kanab Canyon. Published in "Picturesque America; or The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1874, this print offers viewers a glimpse into an era where exploration and discovery were paramount. It serves as both a testament to human perseverance and nature's breathtaking wonders—a reminder that our world is filled with hidden treasures waiting to be unveiled.
