Joshua Defeating Amalek. Creator: Pauwels Casteels
Joshua Defeating Amalek, Unknown date.
After the people of Israel had fled from Egypt and arrived at a place called Rephidim they were attacked by the Amalekites (an ancient nomadic tribel).
Moses then decided that Joshua was to select soldiers and fight Amalek while he stood on the top of a hill and prayed. Moses was accompanied by Aaron (his
brother and senior by three years) and Hur. Moses lifted up his arms. When he did so the Israelites prevailed, but when he lowered them they began to lose.
After a time Moses became tired and sat on a stone while Aaron and Hur supported his arms. In this way Moses could keep his arms raised to heaven until sunset and Joshua could defeat Amalek.
In the foreground we can see knights in battle: King Amalek has fallen from his horse and is lying wounded while an enemy raises his sword above him and a
horseman his lance. In the foreground a wounded Amalekite flees along the road on the right dressed in a turban and a green mantle, a mounted archer follows at a distance. On a height to the left in the central ground the seated Moses can be seen at prayer

Joshua Defeats Amalek
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating artwork by Flemish painter Pauwels Casteels, depicting a pivotal moment in the Old Testament narrative. The scene unfolds at Rephidim, where the Israelites, having escaped from Egypt, were ambushed by the Amalekites, a nomadic tribe. Moses, the Israelites' leader, instructed Joshua to gather soldiers and engage the Amalekites in battle. Meanwhile, Moses ascended a hilltop to pray, accompanied by his brother Aaron and Hur. As Moses lifted his arms, the Israelites gained the upper hand, but when he lowered them, their fortunes waned. In this evocative print, Moses can be seen seated on a stone, his arms raised in prayer, as the tide of battle turns in favor of the Israelites. In the foreground, the defeated Amalekite king lies wounded on the ground, with an enemy soldier poised to strike the final blow. A fleeing Amalekite, dressed in a turban and green mantle, is pursued by a mounted archer. The intricate details of the armor, weapons, and expressions of the figures convey the intensity and drama of the battle. This powerful image not only showcases Pauwels Casteels' mastery of the Baroque style but also highlights the biblical story's enduring themes of faith, courage, and victory. The artwork serves as a testament to the power of prayer and the importance of unity and determination in the face of adversity.
