John Tyndall lecturing on electromagnetism at the Royal Institution, London. May 1870

John Tyndall lecturing on electromagnetism at the Royal Institution, London. May 1870. Irish-born British physicist Tyndall (1820-1893) was appointed Professor of Natural Philosophy at the Royal Institution, London in 1854. Some of his most notable work was carried out in the fields of heat radiation and acoustics. A keen mountaineer, he combined the pastime with studies of glacial motion in the Swiss Alps. Towards the end of his life Tyndalls health was poor and he died in 1893 from an accidental overdose of chloral hydrate, an imsomnia cure widely misused in the late 19th century. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned physicist, Professor John Tyndall, delivering a lecture on electromagnetism at the prestigious Royal Institution in London. Taken in May 1870, this image showcases Tyndall's commanding presence as he captivates his audience with his profound knowledge and eloquence. Born in Ireland but later becoming a prominent figure in British science, Tyndall was appointed as the Professor of Natural Philosophy at the Royal Institution in 1854. Throughout his illustrious career, he made significant contributions to various scientific fields such as heat radiation and acoustics. However, it was not just his academic pursuits that defined him; Tyndall also had a passion for mountaineering which he combined with studying glacial motion in the Swiss Alps. Sadly, towards the end of his life, Tyndall battled poor health. Tragically, he passed away in 1893 due to an accidental overdose of chloral hydrate - an insomnia cure widely misused during that era. The wood engraving featured here originally appeared in The Illustrated London News on May 14th, 1870. It immortalizes this iconic moment when Professor John Tyndall shared his expertise on electromagnetism with eager listeners within the grand lecture theatre of the Royal Institution. This remarkable image serves as a testament to both Tyndall's intellectual prowess and enduring legacy within Victorian science.
