John Hanning Speke, British explorer, 19th century
John Hanning Speke, British explorer, 19th century. In 1858, Speke (1827-1864) and Richard Burton became the first Europeans to discover Lake Tanganyika. Speke then set out alone and arrived at an even larger lake, that he called Lake Victoria. He believed that the lake represented the source of the Nile, a claim that was disputed by Burton amongst others. Speke died from a gunshot wound from his own gun while hunting on the day he was due to debate the Nile claim with Burton in front of members of the Royal Geographical Society

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts John Hanning Speke, a renowned British explorer of the 19th century. In his adventurous journey alongside Richard Burton in 1858, they became the first Europeans to stumble upon Lake Tanganyika. However, it was Speke's solo expedition that led him to an even grander discovery - a vast lake he named Lake Victoria. With great conviction, he proclaimed this majestic body of water as the source of the Nile River. Yet, controversy surrounded Speke's claim as some skeptics like Burton disputed its validity. Tragically, fate intervened on the day when Speke was scheduled to debate this very matter with Burton before members of the esteemed Royal Geographical Society. While hunting alone, he suffered a fatal gunshot wound from his own gun. In this historic engraving captured during his prime years, we see a bearded and distinguished-looking man who embodies both courage and curiosity. His exploration endeavors across uncharted territories in Africa brought forth significant geographical discoveries that continue to shape our understanding of the continent today. As we gaze at this portrait of John Hanning Speke, we are reminded not only of his remarkable contributions but also of the risks undertaken by intrepid explorers who sought knowledge beyond known horizons. This image serves as a poignant tribute to an extraordinary individual whose legacy lives on through his groundbreaking expeditions and unwavering pursuit for truth amidst controversy.
