Jock McAvoy, British boxer, 1938

Jock McAvoy, British boxer, 1938. Born Joseph Patrick Bamford, McAvoy (1908-1971) changed his name in order to hide the fact he was boxing from his mother. During his career he held the British and Empire middleweight titles and, in 1935, knocked out world middleweight champion Ed Babe Risko in the first round in a non-title fight. In 1936 he made an unsuccessful challenge for the world light-heavyweight championship, losing to the American champion John Henry Lewis on points. McAvoy won 132 fights over his career, with just 14 defeats. A Churchmans Cigarettes picture card

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Jock McAvoy, the renowned British boxer, in 1938. Born Joseph Patrick Bamford, McAvoy adopted a different name to conceal his boxing career from his mother. Throughout his remarkable journey in the ring, he held both the British and Empire middleweight titles. In an astonishing display of skill and power, McAvoy knocked out world middleweight champion Ed Babe Risko in just one round during a non-title fight in 1935. Although he faced defeat against American champion John Henry Lewis in a challenge for the world light-heavyweight championship in 1936, McAvoy's legacy remains unparalleled. With an impressive record of 132 victories and only 14 losses throughout his career, he solidified himself as one of Britain's most accomplished boxers. The monochrome portrait showcases McAvoy dressed impeccably for battle with boxing gloves on hand and sporting a vest that exudes strength and determination. This image is part of Churchmans Cigarettes' collection of sports personalities captured on picture cards. Jock McAvoy's impact on British boxing history cannot be overstated; this photograph serves as a testament to his extraordinary talent and unwavering dedication to the sport.
