Jesus being awakened during a tempest on the Sea of Galilee, from a Mir at al-quds
Jesus being awakened during a tempest on the Sea of Galilee, from a Mir at al-quds of Father Jerome Xavier (Spanish, 1549-1617), 1602-1604. The boat carrying Jesus and his apostles encountered a tempest on the Sea of Galilee. As the apostles began to panic and fear that their boat would sink, Jesus continued to sleep peacefully. The painter illustrates the moment before Jesus was awakened by his apostles, who are frightened by the storm and perhaps also by the crocodile that sticks its head out of the waves. The power of the gale is indicated by the violently twisting sail and the Mughal-style tassel that swings at the top of the mast. This composition is the only one in the Cleveland manuscript to be based on an identifiable European print

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dramatic moment when Jesus is awakened during a tempest on the Sea of Galilee. Painted by Father Jerome Xavier in 1602-1604, this masterpiece showcases the artist's exceptional talent and attention to detail. In this scene, we witness Jesus peacefully sleeping amidst a raging storm while his apostles fearfully grapple with the imminent danger. The artist skillfully portrays their panic through their expressions and gestures, as they desperately try to navigate through treacherous waves. Adding to their distress, a menacing crocodile emerges from the tumultuous waters, heightening the sense of chaos and peril. The power of nature is vividly depicted in this composition - from the violently twisting sail that threatens to tear apart to the Mughal-style tassel swinging at the top of the mast. These elements emphasize both the ferocity of the storm and its potential consequences for those aboard. Notably, this artwork stands out among others in its manuscript due to its European influence. It draws inspiration from an identifiable European print but incorporates distinctive Mughal style and techniques synonymous with Northern India during that period. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art, this exquisite painting exemplifies Heritage Art's commitment to showcasing historical masterpieces that transcend time and cultural boundaries. Through ink, opaque watercolor, gold accents on paper, Father Jerome Xavier's creation continues to captivate viewers with its narrative power and artistic brilliance.
