EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the inscription on the monument to David Livingstone, located in Zambia, Africa. The late 19th or early 20th-century image showcases the memorial dedicated to Scottish missionary and explorer Livingstone (1813-1873). Known for his remarkable achievements, Livingstone was the first European to discover the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls along the Zambezi River in central Africa. The photograph also reminds us of Livingstone's arduous journey while searching for the source of the Nile in the late 1860s. During this expedition, he fell seriously ill and went missing. However, his determination led him back into history when he was found by Henry Morton Stanley in 1871. Despite being rescued, Livingstone never fully recovered from his illness and eventually passed away in Bangwelulu, Zambia. This monumental tribute stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication towards exploration and spreading Christianity throughout Africa. The image evokes a sense of reverence as we contemplate Livingstone's significant contributions to both African exploration and religious occupation during that era. It serves as a powerful reminder of how one individual can shape our understanding of an entire continent's geography and culture. As we gaze upon this historic lantern slide print captured by The Print Collector, it transports us back to a time when Victorian-era British explorers like David Livingstone embarked on daring adventures across uncharted territories - forever leaving their mark on history.
