EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image, captured by the renowned English engraver Smyth for the Illustrated London News in 1856, presents Her Imperial Majesty the Empress of the French, Eugenie de Montijo, with her young son, Prince Louis Napoleon. The scene takes place in the Chapel of the Palace of Saint-Cloud, outside Paris, where the infant prince was baptized. The Empress, dressed in elegant attire, cradles her son, who is adorned in ornate christening robes. The room is filled with an air of opulence, with intricate decorations and an abundance of flowers adding to the festive atmosphere. Eugenie de Montijo, born Dona Maria Eugenia Ignatia Augustina de Palafox y Kirkpatrick, Countess of Teba, was the wife of Napoleon III, Emperor of the French from 1852 until his fall from power in 1870. The couple's only child, Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, was born on April 10, 1856, and this photograph captures a precious moment in their family life. The baptism marked an important event in the young prince's life, signifying his entry into the Christian faith and his role as the heir to the French throne.
