Imperial Institute, London, 20th Century

Imperial Institute, London, 20th Century. Designed by Sir Thomas Colcutt and opened in 1887, the Imperial Institute was intended to be a monument to the emerging imperial sentiment. The buildings were demolished in the 1950s and 1960s after the institute closed, with the exception of the Queens Tower, which still stands today on the campus of Imperial College. Postcard from The Souvenir Album, Views of London And The River Thames, From London To Oxford, (London, 20th Century)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Imperial Institute in London, a magnificent architectural marvel designed by Sir Thomas Colcutt and opened in 1887. Serving as a testament to the rising imperial sentiment of its time, this grand structure aimed to embody the strength and influence of the British Empire. Sadly, after fulfilling its purpose and closing down, most of the buildings were demolished during the 1950s and 1960s. However, one iconic remnant still stands tall today on the campus of Imperial College - the Queens Tower. This tower serves as a poignant reminder of an era long gone. The image captured on this postcard from The Souvenir Album offers us a glimpse into London's rich history and heritage. Its vibrant colors bring life to every detail, showcasing not only the exterior beauty but also symbolizing education, research, communication, and progress. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, we are transported back to Victorian England when this architectural masterpiece stood proudly amidst Kensington and Chelsea's landscape. It evokes feelings of awe for its intricate design while reflecting upon an era that shaped our world. Preserved by The Print Collector with great care and attention to detail, this print allows us to appreciate both Thomas Edward Colcutt's genius as an architect and his contribution to British architecture during that period.
