Hurdwar, a place of Hindu pilgrimage, India, c1860

Hurdwar, a place of Hindu pilgrimage, India, c1860. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began in the town of Meerut and soon erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions across many regions of Company-ruled north-central India. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to British power in that region and it was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also often known as the Indian Mutiny, the Sepoy Mutiny, the Great Rebellion, the Revolt of 1857 and occasionally, in India, as the First War of Independence. From The History of the Indian Mutiny, volume VII, by Charles Ball, published by The London Printing & Publishing Company (c1860)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1860, capturing the essence of Hurdwar, a significant Hindu pilgrimage site in India. The image showcases a serene riverbank scene, with people gathered along its shores engaging in religious activities. In the background, we can see fortifications and buildings that reflect the historical context of this period. The photograph serves as a reminder of the turbulent times during which it was taken. Just a few years prior, in 1857, the Indian Rebellion (also known as the Indian Mutiny or Sepoy Mutiny) had erupted across north-central India. This rebellion posed a substantial threat to British power in the region and was only quelled after several months of intense conflict. Published by Charles Ball in his renowned work "The History of the Indian Mutiny" this engraving provides valuable insight into both historical events and cultural practices at that time. It allows us to appreciate how religion played an integral role amidst political upheaval. Through this print collector's lens, we are transported to Hurdwar—a place where spirituality intertwines with history—offering us a glimpse into India's rich heritage and reminding us of its resilience even during challenging times.
