H.R.H. Prince Albert's Harriers, 1856. Creator: Harrison Weir
H.R.H. Prince Albert's Harriers, 1856. Hare-coursing in Berkshire. Prince Albert's harriers are in the strictest sense of the term a private pack, kept by his Royal Highness for his own amusement, under the management of Colonel Hood...The hounds were...of medium size, with considerable variety of true colours...we soon found a stout hare that gave us an opportunity of seeing and admiring the qualities of the pack... just as we were squaring our shoulders and settling down to take a very uncompromising hedge with evident signs of a broad ditch of running water on the other side, the hounds threw up their heads...We must, at the risk of being considered spoony [soppy or sentimental], own that there is something painful about the helpless finish with a hare. A fox dies snarling and fighting; but one often wishes the hare to get away'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "H.R.H. Prince Albert's Harriers, 1856" by renowned English artist Harrison Weir, transports us back to the 19th century and the world of aristocratic country pursuits. The image depicts a group of elegantly dressed gentlemen, including Prince Albert himself, gathered around their hounds as they prepare for a day of hare coursing in the picturesque English countryside of Berkshire. Prince Albert's Harriers were a private pack of hounds, kept for the royal prince's personal enjoyment. The hounds, of medium size with a variety of true colours, are shown in this image, eagerly awaiting the start of the hunt. The scene is described in an article from the "Illustrated London News" of 1856, which accompanied the photograph, as the huntsmen and riders prepare to take on a stout hare. The image captures the essence of high-class rural life in the 19th century, with the huntsmen dressed in their finest apparel, complete with hats and hunting dress. The horses, too, are impeccably turned out, adding to the overall sense of grandeur and refinement. However, the article's author, writing in the Victorian era, acknowledges the controversial nature of blood sports and the pain inflicted on the hare. Despite this, the image remains a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era, showcasing the fashion, class, and rural traditions of the time. Harrison Weir, a prolific illustrator and animal painter, expertly captures the spirit of the moment, creating a timeless image that continues to intrigue and captivate viewers today.
