Honeysuckle, Early 20th century. Creator: William Morris (British, 1834-1896)

Honeysuckle, Early 20th century. William Morriss daughter May called Honeysuckle " the most truly Morrisian in character of all his pattern-making... the most mysterious and poetic--the very symbol of a garden tangle." Like many Morris textiles from this period, Honeysuckle has a mirrored pattern. At 29 3/4 inches high and 34 3/4 inches wide, this repeat was unusually broad, spanning almost the entire width of the loom. Morris believed that large patterns were more restful to the eye than small patterns, even when used to decorate modestly sized rooms. Designs from this period are a testament to the delight he took in his garden at Kelmscott Manor; he favored the charm of native English flowers above exotic specimens

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite work of British artist William Morris in his creation titled "Honeysuckle". Dating back to the early 20th century, this pattern is hailed by Morris's daughter May as the epitome of his artistic style. She describes it as "the most truly Morrisian in character" possessing an air of mystery and poetry that symbolizes a tangled garden. What sets Honeysuckle apart from other Morris textiles of its time is its mirrored pattern. Spanning almost the entire width of the loom at an unusually broad size, measuring 29 3/4 inches high and 34 3/4 inches wide, this repeat design offers a sense of grandeur. It reflects Morris's belief that larger patterns are more soothing to the eye, even when adorning modestly sized rooms. The inspiration behind Honeysuckle lies within Morris's deep appreciation for nature. The design pays homage to native English flowers rather than exotic specimens, highlighting his fondness for Kelmscott Manor's enchanting garden. This period in his career demonstrates how he found delight in capturing the charm and beauty of these blossoms. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this plain weave linen textile represents not only a significant piece from Britain's arts and crafts movement but also serves as a testament to William Morris's enduring legacy as one of history's most influential artists.
