EDITORS COMMENTS
His Highness the Nizam of Hyderabad, Bahadur Mahbub Ali Khan, also known as Mir Mahboob Ali Khan Siddiqi Bayafandi, was a prominent ruler of the Princely State of Hyderabad in India during the late 19th century. In this engraving from a photograph taken by Mr. Hurrychund Chintamon, the Nizam is depicted as a distinguished and regal figure, adorned in traditional Indian clothing. At the time of this photograph, the Nizam's rule was under the guidance of Sir Salar Jung, who had been appointed Minister of Hyderabad following the death of the previous Nizam in 1869. Salar Jung's administration brought tranquility to the region, repressed lawless mercenaries, and checked disorder. During the minority of the young Nizam, who was only three years old at the time, Salar Jung and another native nobleman assumed the role of Regent. The Nizam is seen wearing a long robe, adorned with intricate designs and patterns, and a necklace and finger ring, adding to his regal appearance. The photograph was published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1876, highlighting the interest and influence of British newspapers in the affairs of the Indian subcontinent. Bahadur Mahbub Ali Khan's excellent government is noted in the caption, reflecting the positive impact of Salar Jung's leadership during the transition of power. This photograph offers a glimpse into the fashion and royalty of the 19th century in India, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and history of the region.
