EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Henry Warner Slocum, a prominent Union general during the American Civil War. Painted by J Rogers, this portrait showcases Slocum's strong and determined demeanor as he gazes into the distance. Slocum was known for his remarkable achievements on the battlefield, despite facing criticism for his delayed deployment at Gettysburg which earned him the nickname "Slow Come". However, he quickly redeemed himself by serving effectively in the western theatre of war. In September 1864, Slocum commanded the first unit to enter Atlanta when it fell to Union forces. The engraving from volume III of The War with the South: A History of the Late Rebellion provides a historical context to this image. It is evident that Slocum played a significant role in shaping America's history during this tumultuous period. As one of the youngest Major Generals in the Union Army, Slocum exemplified courage and leadership throughout his military career. This portrait not only pays tribute to an influential figure but also serves as a reminder of those who fought valiantly for their country during times of great turmoil. With its monochrome aesthetic and attention to detail, this print transports us back to nineteenth-century America, allowing us to appreciate both its artistic value and historical significance.
