In the Anglo-Dutch War of 1665-1667 he did the same to the Dutch. Morgan captured Panama in 1671, but after a peace agreement was signed with Spain, he was arrested and sent to London. His fortunes changed again in 1674, when he was knighted by Charles II, who sent him abroad again as deputy governor of Jamaica

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the infamous Henry Morgan, a 17th-century Welsh pirate who left an indelible mark on history. Created by Bonneau in 1741, this engraving captures the essence of Morgan's enigmatic character and his tumultuous life. Henry Morgan was not your ordinary pirate; he operated with the tacit support of the English government as he plundered Spain's Caribbean colonies during a time when England and Spain were at odds. Not stopping there, he also targeted Dutch territories during the Anglo-Dutch War. His audacity knew no bounds. In 1671, Morgan achieved one of his most significant feats by capturing Panama. However, after a peace agreement was signed with Spain, his fortunes took a turn for the worse. He was arrested and sent to London to face justice for his crimes. But fate had other plans for him. In 1674, Charles II knighted him and appointed him as deputy governor of Jamaica. This unexpected twist allowed Sir Henry Morgan to continue exerting influence in the Caribbean while wearing a different hat - that of an official representative of British authority. Bonneau's masterful portrayal immortalizes Captain Sir Henry Morgan in this monochrome portrait print. The intricate details capture every nuance of his attire and demeanor, reminding us that even those branded as criminals can find redemption or be repurposed by those in power.
