Henry IV of France watching the departure of the Spaniards from Paris, 22 March 1594

Henry IV of France watching the departure of the Spaniards from Porte Saint-Denis, Paris 22 March 1594. Although Henry (1553-1610) became King of France in 1589, France was embroiled in civil war between the Protestant Huguenots, including Henry, and the Catholic Holy League, founded by Henry, Duke of Guise, with Spanish support, which held Paris. In 1593 Henry converted to Catholicism in a bid to end the civil war. Support for the king grew, and in 1594 he was able to enter Paris and ascend the throne. After a further 3 years of war against Spain and his remaining opponents, Henry signed the Edict of Nantes in 1598, granting religious freedoms to the Protestants and bringing the conflict to an end

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print, we witness a pivotal moment in history as King Henry IV of France watches the departure of the Spaniards from Porte Saint-Denis in Paris on 22 March 1594. The image captures the end of a long and brutal civil war that had torn apart the nation. Henry IV, originally a Protestant Huguenot, found himself embroiled in a conflict against the Catholic Holy League, supported by Spain. In an effort to unite his fractured country, he converted to Catholicism and gained increasing support from his subjects. Finally, after years of warfare and political maneuvering, Henry was able to enter Paris and ascend to the throne. The photograph showcases Henry's stoic presence as he stands amidst the ruins of battle-worn buildings. Clad in armor with a spear at hand, he symbolizes both strength and resilience. His watchful gaze reflects determination as well as relief for having achieved this significant victory. This image is not just about one man or one moment; it represents an entire era marked by religious strife and political turmoil. It signifies the triumph of unity over division, tolerance over intolerance. Today, this print serves as a reminder of how far society has come since those turbulent times. It reminds us that even during our darkest moments, there is always hope for reconciliation and progress.
