The Great Semmering Railway - the Weinzettelwand Tunnel, 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Great Semmering Railway - the Weinzettelwand Tunnel, 1860. This is a great engineering work constructed through a mountain range to Styria, mainly by means of a series of viaducts and tunnels, and forming one of the links of the line between Vienna and Trieste. The distance over which this portion of the work runs is about seventy-three English miles, and is provided with seven stations. The gradients of the line are exceedingly steep...Crossing the viaduct of Karntnerkogel, the line plunges into a subterranean passage of the same name, and passing along the declivities of the Mortengraben hills, opposite to which runs the old post-road of Semmering, behind which rise the Schneeberg and Raxalpe hills, the station at Semmering is reached...So peculiar are the gradients of the line that locomotives of a special description have been constructed with a power of 1000 cwt. Austrian. The line has been constructed under the superintendence of Karl von Ghega, Inspector of Public Works'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases The Great Semmering Railway, specifically the Weinzettelwand Tunnel, constructed in the year 1860. The railway, a marvel of engineering, stretches approximately seventy-three miles through the mountain range of Styria, linking Vienna and Trieste. The railway's unique features include a series of viaducts and tunnels, of which the Weinzettelwand Tunnel is a notable example. The railway's terrain is challenging, with steep gradients that required the construction of locomotives with a power of 1000 cwt. Austrian. The railway's passage begins with the crossing of the Karntnerkogel viaduct, which leads the line into the subterranean passage of the same name. The Mortengraben hills, with the old post-road of Semmering and the Schneeberg and Raxalpe hills in the background, come into view as the train approaches the station at Semmering. The railway's construction was overseen by Karl von Ghega, the Inspector of Public Works, making it a testament to the engineering prowess of the time. This photograph, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1860, provides a glimpse into the past, showcasing the ingenuity and determination of the engineers who built this railway through the rugged terrain of the Semmering Mountains.
