Grand Banquet to Viscount Palmerston by the Reform Club, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Grand Banquet to Viscount Palmerston by the Reform Club, [London], 1850. Dinner in honour of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. It is to be regretted that the committee, in making their arrangements for the number to be present at the banquet, did not include proper accommodation, according to the usual custom on such occasions, for the representatives of the press. Some of the leading morning journals very properly declined sending any gentlemen connected with their establishments to report the proceedings, in consequence of the ill-advised and very ill-bred resolve of the committee to find no room for the reporters at the banquet-table until after the cloth had been removed'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1850, depicts the Grand Banquet held in honor of Viscount Palmerston, the British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, by the Reform Club in London. The room is filled with an air of sophistication and grandeur, as men in formal attire gather around long dining tables adorned with elegant candelabras and candles. The banquet appears to be in full swing, with plates piled high and glasses raised in toast. However, the scene was not without controversy. The committee organizing the event had failed to make accommodations for the press, a decision that was met with disapproval by several leading morning newspapers. As a result, no reporters were present to document the proceedings until after the meal had been served. This omission was met with disappointment and frustration, as the absence of press coverage was seen as an attempt to keep the events of the banquet private. Despite this, the image captures the essence of the Old Boys Network that was prevalent in British society during the 19th century. The Reform Club, an exclusive gentlemen's club, was a place where men of power and influence gathered to discuss politics, business, and social matters. The banquet served as an opportunity for these men to come together, network, and strengthen their connections. The photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the world of 19th-century British society and the inner workings of the Old Boys Network. With its intricate details, from the ornate candlesticks to the meticulously set dining tables, this image is a testament to the grandeur and elegance of the era.
