Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, was a British statesman who served twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in the mid-19th century. He was born in London in 1784 and educated at Harrow School and St. John's College, Cambridge. He entered politics in 1807 as a member of the Tory party and held various offices before becoming Foreign Secretary under Sir Robert Peel from 1841 to 1846. In 1855 he became Prime Minister for the first time, serving until his death in 1865. During his tenure he championed free trade policies and sought to strengthen Britain's position on the European continent by forming alliances with other European powers such as France and Prussia. His foreign policy was often controversial but ultimately successful; he is remembered today for his strong leadership during a period of great change for Britain both domestically and abroad.
