Grand avenue approaching the Temple of Karnak, Thebes, Egypt, 1905. Artist: Underwood & Underwood

Grand avenue approaching the Temple of Karnak, Thebes, Egypt, 1905. The soldiers of Assyria in plundering bands have marched down this avenue. Persian hordes have swarmed through it. Alexanders phalanxes have trodden it. The legions of Rome have wrecked it, and the image-hating Moslems have shattered its sculptures, until, war-worn and weather-beaten, these scarred and battered forms show little of their former semblance, and you can hardly find a single ram of which the head is still in place. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

Grand Avenue Approaching the Temple of Karnak, Thebes, Egypt, 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back in time to the ancient city of Thebes in Egypt. As we gaze upon this image captured by Underwood & Underwood, we are transported to a place where history has left its mark on every stone. The grandeur of the Temple of Karnak is undeniable as we see it standing proudly at the end of Grand Avenue. This sacred site has witnessed countless civilizations pass through its gates - from Assyrian soldiers to Persian invaders and Alexander's mighty phalanxes. Even Rome's legions and image-hating Moslems have left their scars upon these weather-beaten sculptures. In this monochrome scene, we can almost feel the weight of time pressing down upon us. The decapitated statues lining the avenue serve as a haunting reminder of the destruction that war and religious conflicts have brought upon this once majestic place. Yet amidst all the devastation, there is an undeniable sense of resilience that emanates from these battered forms. They stand as silent witnesses to centuries gone by, still commanding our attention despite their fragmented state. As we contemplate this stereoscopic card from "Egypt Through the Stereoscope" with text by James H Breasted, let us reflect on how history shapes our present and reminds us to cherish and protect our cultural heritage for future generations.
