Glen Canon, 1874. Creator: W. J. Linton
Glen Canon, 1874. View of Glen Canyon, part of an immense system of canyons carved out by the Colorado River and its tributaries in Utah and Arizona, USA. At the end of Narrow Canon, the character of the gorge changes, and, from that point to the place where the Paria River enters the Colorado...it is called Glen Canon. At the mouth of the Paria, a trail leads down the cliffs to the bottom of the canon...The smooth and precipitous character of the walls of Glen Canon is well shown in the illustration. The chasm is carved in homogeneous red sandstone, and in some places, for a thousand feet on the face of the rock, there is scarce a check or seam. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

Glen Canon, 1874 - A Majestic Glimpse into Nature's Masterpiece
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photo print, taken in 1874 by W. J. Linton, transports us to the awe-inspiring Glen Canyon in Utah and Arizona, USA. As part of a vast system of canyons carved out by the mighty Colorado River and its tributaries, Glen Canyon stands as a testament to the power of nature. The image captures the transition at Narrow Canon where the character of the gorge undergoes a remarkable change. From this point onwards until the Paria River merges with the Colorado, it is known as Glen Canon. The trail leading down from the cliffs to the canyon floor near Paria's mouth adds an adventurous element to this already breathtaking landscape. Linton's illustration beautifully showcases the smooth and precipitous walls that define Glen Canon. Carved meticulously over time in homogeneous red sandstone, these towering cliffs reach staggering heights of up to a thousand feet without any visible imperfections or seams. Originally featured in "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant, this engraving offers viewers a glimpse into one of America's most dramatic geological features. With its striking rock formations and unparalleled beauty, Glen Canyon serves as both an artistic inspiration and a reminder of our planet's extraordinary natural wonders. As we admire Linton's work today, let us appreciate not only his skillful portrayal but also recognize our responsibility to preserve such magnificent landscapes for future generations to cherish and protect.
