General Türr, Garibaldi's chief aide-de-camp, 1860. Creator: Unknown
General Turr, Garibaldi's chief aide-de-camp, 1860....General commanding a division of the army of the liberator Garibaldi Dictator of Sicily...[He is] a native of Hungary, and comes of a noble although not a titled family. He is about thirty-five or thirty-six years of age, tall, handsome, and of distinguished appearance and soldierly bearing...in Brescia, Turr was passing a house whence he heard shrieks of distress. Entering...he found a family in the hands of the brutal Croats, and rescued two beautiful girls from their barbarity. Such incidents as these determined the young soldier to devote his sword to the cause of liberty when Hungary rose against the tyranny of the Hapsburgs. Throughout that war he fought bravely; and when hostilities between England and Russia broke out he offered his services, which were accepted, to this country. Being sent into the Principalities to select and purchase horses for the British troops, the zeal of Turr led him to expose himself somewhat rashly to the Austrian authorities, and he was seized at Bucharest while wearing a British uniform, thrown into a dungeon, and condemned to be hanged...Turr fought in the Crimea towards the close of the war, and was present at the battle of the Tchernaya'. General Türr - Garibaldi's Brave and Noble Hungarian Aide-de-Camp (1860)
EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the likeness of General Türr, the distinguished chief aide-de-camp to the legendary Italian liberator, Giuseppe Garibaldi. At the time this image was taken, Türr was commanding a division of Garibaldi's army and serving as the Dictator of Sicily. Born in Hungary, Türr hailed from a noble family without titles. He was around thirty-five or thirty-six years old, standing tall and handsome with an air of soldierly bearing that commanded respect. In Brescia, Türr's courage and compassion were revealed when he entered a house to find a family being brutally attacked by Croats. He valiantly rescued two beautiful girls from their clutches, solidifying his commitment to the cause of liberty as Hungary rose against the oppressive Hapsburgs. Throughout the Hungarian war, Türr fought bravely, and when conflicts arose between England and Russia, he eagerly offered his services to the British. Assigned to procure horses for British troops in the Principalities, Türr's unwavering dedication led him to risk his life, wearing a British uniform and being captured by Austrian authorities in Bucharest. Imprisoned and sentenced to hang, Türr's spirit remained unbroken. Türr's bravery continued in the Crimea, where he participated in the battle of the Tchernaya towards the war's end. This photograph serves as a testament to the remarkable life of this noble Hungarian soldier, who dedicated his sword to the pursuit of freedom and liberty.
