EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1858, captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of General Perronet Thompson, Member of Parliament for Bradford. Thompson, born in 1810, was a British army officer and colonial administrator who gained notoriety for his radical reforms in Sierra Leone. Thompson's military career began in 1829 when he joined the 71st Foot Regiment. He saw action in the First Afghan War and was later appointed as aide-de-camp to Lord Elgin, the Governor-General of Canada. In 1850, Thompson was appointed as the Governor of Sierra Leone, a position he held until 1854. During his tenure, he implemented a series of reforms aimed at improving the lives of the local population. He abolished the slave trade, introduced free education, and established a system of communal land tenure. Despite his reformist efforts, Thompson's governorship was not without controversy. He was accused of misappropriating funds and was eventually recalled to Britain. Thompson returned to Britain and was elected as the Member of Parliament for Bradford in 1857. He continued to advocate for reforms, particularly in the areas of education and land tenure. This photograph, taken by John Watkins in 1858, captures Thompson in the prime of his political career. The image conveys a sense of authority and purpose, reflecting Thompson's unwavering commitment to reform and his belief in the power of the individual to effect change. The photograph is a testament to Thompson's remarkable life and legacy as a British politician, colonial administrator, and radical reformer.
