Furling Sail in the Pack, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Furling Sail in the Pack, c1910– 1913, (1913). Sailors on the Terra Nova. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Furling Sail in the Pack, c1910–1913" by Herbert Ponting takes us back to a significant moment in history. The image captures sailors on the Terra Nova during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In 1910, Captain Scott embarked on what would be known as the Terra Nova Expedition, with a diverse team of scientists and experts. Their mission was twofold: to continue scientific research in Antarctica and to become the first explorers to reach the South Pole. The photograph showcases sailors skillfully furling sails amidst an icy landscape, highlighting their resilience and determination in this harsh environment. It serves as a testament to their unwavering commitment despite facing extreme conditions. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, they were met with crushing disappointment. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already beaten them to claim victory at the South Pole just one month earlier. Tragically, due to blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March that same year. This poignant image is part of "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913. It not only immortalizes an important chapter in exploration but also pays tribute to those brave individuals who sacrificed everything for scientific discovery and human ambition.
