Football in Manilla, 1857. Creator: Unknown
Football in Manilla, 1857. Sport in the Philippines:..Sketch of a game at football, at which the Indians are very great. They stand in a circle, and with their feet keep up the ball for any length of time. The ball is made of wickerwork, and is like a round basket; the game is never to let it touch the ground after it is once up, and always to manage to strike it with the feet. Some players are very expert at the "back-footed" trick; with the sole of their foot they will send the ball right over their heads to the players in front of them, who, in their turn, send it back again. The game is a most extraordinary sight, and the players are wonderfully clever at it. In England, football is one of your oldest games; but I have never seen it played with such dexterity as in Manilla'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

Football in Manilla, 1857: A Captivating Sight of Indigenous Athletes in the Philippines This image, titled 'Football in Manilla, 1857,' showcases an extraordinary football match taking place in the heart of the Philippines. The photograph, created by an unknown artist, was published in the prestigious 'Illustrated London News,' providing a glimpse into the unique and dexterous way football was played in the region during the 19th century. In this scene, a group of Filipino men stand in a circle, skillfully keeping a wickerwork ball aloft with their bare feet. The ball, resembling a round basket, never touches the ground once it's up, and the players take turns sending it back and forth using the sole of their feet. The 'back-footed' trick, where the ball is sent over the players' heads, adds an extra layer of complexity to the game. The photograph offers a fascinating contrast to the traditional English version of football. The players in this image display remarkable agility and dexterity, a sight the author of the article found most extraordinary. The game, known locally as 'sipa,' was a popular pastime for the indigenous people of Manilla, providing an essential break from their daily work and occupations. The black and white wood engraving, with its intricate details, offers a window into the past, allowing us to witness the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines and the passion for sports that transcends borders and centuries.
