Fire in All Saints Church, at Manchester, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Fire in All Saints Church, at Manchester, 1850....seven fire engines...were stationed in the yard attached to the church; four of them, the Vesta, Neptune, Mersey, and Waterwitch, were placed at the north-west or tower end of the building; the branch from the latter being taken up into the tower, which was, at one time, in imminent danger. The Thames, Niagara, and Ganges engines were situated at the south-east end of the church. A plentiful supply of water having been obtained, the men were dispersed over the various parts of the building. Jets were placed at the four corners of the interior; and it is to this judicious arrangement that the preservation of the galleries and a part of the organ are to be attributed...Through the unremitting exertions of the firemen, the tower, with a great portion of the gallery, and some parts of the organ and pulpit, are saved...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Fire in All Saints' Church, Manchester, 1850: A Dramatic Scene of Devastation and Heroism This evocative print captures the chaos and intensity of a catastrophic fire that engulfed All Saints' Church in Manchester during the nineteenth century. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, documents the heroic efforts of the fire brigade to save the historic building from complete destruction. The scene is one of frenetic activity as seven fire engines, including the Vesta, Neptune, Mersey, Waterwitch, Thames, Niagara, and Ganges, are strategically positioned around the church. Firefighters are seen dispersing throughout the building, directing jets of water towards the flames that consume the interior. The tower, with a significant portion of the gallery and some parts of the organ and pulpit, are saved due to the judicious placement of the engines and the unwavering determination of the firefighters. The crowd that has gathered outside the church gazes on in awe and concern, their faces etched with a mix of anxiety and admiration for the brave men and women who risk their lives to save this important religious and cultural institution. Smoke billows from the windows and the air is thick with the acrid smell of burning wood and plaster. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the power of human resilience and the importance of community during times of crisis. It also underscores the vital role that emergency services play in safeguarding our shared heritage and preserving our collective history.
