Finnesko with Crampons, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Finnesko with Crampons, c1910– 1913, (1913). Finnesko - boots of tanned reindeer skin with the hair on the outside. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Finnesko with Crampons" was captured by the talented artist Herbert Ponting during the Terra Nova Expedition in 1913. The image showcases a pair of Finnesko boots, made from tanned reindeer skin with the hair on the outside. These unique boots were an essential part of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition. Scott's ambitious journey to reach the South Pole began in June 1910, aiming to continue his scientific research and become the first person to conquer this remote region. Alongside him were a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists and physicists. Tragically, after enduring treacherous conditions and battling blizzards that delayed their progress significantly, Scott and his remaining team members reached the South Pole on January 17th, 1912—only to discover that they had been beaten by Norwegian explorer Amundsen's expedition by a month. Running low on supplies and devastated by disappointment as well as extreme weather conditions taking its toll on their strength; Scott and his companions succumbed at the end of March. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies and diaries were discovered. This poignant photograph serves as a powerful reminder of both Captain Scott's determination to push boundaries in exploration and the immense sacrifices made during this historic expedition.
